Chepstow Dog Walking, Pet Sitting and Pet Care at Home in ChepstowCould my dog have canine hay fever?
April 15th, 2011As the summer months approach, the temperature rises and the flowers bloom, many of us find that our nose starts to itch, our eyes begin to stream and we become subject to bouts of endless sneezing as hay fever takes hold. Similarly, if your prized pooch starts to display some of the symptoms below, then it might signal the onset of canine hay fever or, as it’s known in the veterinary profession, ‘Atopic Dermatitis’.
Pollen, grass, dust, mould and smog particles in the air are the primary causes of canine hay fever, which can be incredibly irritating and distressing for dogs, just as it is for humans. If you’ve ever suffered from the illness, you’ll know that the incessant sneezing, sniffling and streaming it causes is really uncomfortable and often distressing. In addition to these symptoms, canine hay fever causes afflicted dogs to itch all over their body and to scratch constantly for relief.
Humans suffer from Inhalant Dermatitis – itching and streaming of the eyes, nose and throat – because the body’s immune response causes histamines to be released to the throat and nasal passages. Where dogs are concerned, the histamines are released to their skin, which causes Atopic Dermatitis. This is believed to affect around one in 10 dogs.
Because the aforementioned allergens are airborne and can therefore be inhaled, they can also result in inflammation of the mucous membranes, also resulting in a runny nose, coughing, sneezing and fever.
Although all dogs are prone to this allergy, the selective breeding of pedigree dogs means that the vulnerable genes are be passed down from generation to generation, meaning that hay fever appears more commonly in thoroughbreds. Breeds such as Schnauzers, Irish Setters, Dalmatians, Poodles and different breeds of Terrier are said to be those breeds most commonly affected.
It’s crucial to seek medical advice and treatment for your dog if they display any of the above symptoms. The itchiness can be exceptionally uncomfortable and distressing, and can quickly result in inflammation, rash, broken skin and hair loss. Naturally, these effects can be a huge blight on your dog’s happiness and comfort levels, and have been known to lead to lethargy and depression in more severe, long-lasting cases.
There are a number of treatments available online, such as medicated shampoos and sprays. In more extreme cases, a visit to your vet is highly recommended. He or she will be able to measure the acuteness of your dog’s allergy and administer allergy shots, where necessary. Of course, these visits can prove to be expensive, so make sure you use the moneysupermarket dog insurance comparison tool to find the best deal and right level of cover for your best friend.
Chepstow Dog Walking, Pet Sitting and Pet Care at Home in ChepstowWhat to do with the poop!
January 17th, 2011A client today was asking if I knew of any dog poop solutions of what to do with your dogs poop in your garden? I knew I had seen some bio degradable bins with lids that you can bury in the ground so just the lid is above ground and the contents breaks down with the aid of a solution and drains away harmlessly into the ground. Here is one that I have found available on line in the UK.
